Chennai, Jan 16 (): Tamil Pongal releases “Jilla” and “Veeram” have shown tremendous performances at the box office and trade experts have described the opening as an auspicious start to 2014. Both the films have registered record openings in the opening weekend.
Both films were released on 10 January. The makers had planned to utilise the long holiday for Pongal; they had released the movies four days prior to Pongal.
“Veeram” and “Jilla” have both performed well at the box office due to the presence of big stars like Ajith, Vijay and Mohanlal. Not only the movies have made a good opening on the first day of its release, they have also made a whooping collection in their opening weekend and are still running to packed houses. Traders say the films have been performing well in India as well as overseas. The films are performing equally well in certain markets.
However, when taking into account the overall first weekend collections from India, “Jilla” has raced ahead of “Veeram”.
Reports say, “Jilla” collected Rs 20 crore nett in the first weekend at the Indian box office, whereas “Veeram” has earned Rs 17.8 crore.
Trade analyst Trinath said that the accurate number for both ‘Jilla’ and ‘Veeram’ is not known yet but for sure the film have registered record openings. He said each film has collected over Rs.25 crore worldwide in the opening weekend.
Kerala market has played a major role in placing “Jilla” ahead of “Veeram” in their opening weekend collections. Vijay and superstar Mohanlal starrer “Jilla” registered the highest opening in Kerala. The collections of “Veeram” and “Jilla” has been neck-to-neck in Karnataka and the rest of India.
But, reports say “Veeram” business was higher than “Jilla” in Tamil Nadu. The Ajith starrer has reportedly collected Rs 15.5 crore nett in the state, while “Jilla” collected in Rs 14.5 crore nett during the opening weekend.
