CBI Chief rape proverb and regret create more trouble

New Delhi, Nov 14 (): CBI Director Ranjit Sinha has tied himself in knots by landing in a massive controversy by equating the legalizing of betting on sports to enjoying rape if one cannot stop it. The explanation is even more bizarre.

Women activists and MPs are asking for his head. At the meet organized by CBI yesterday, V Narayanaswamy, Minister in PMO joined PM and FM in bashing the central agency.

CBI’s top chief Sinha was at a panel discussion on Tuesday evening, trying to put across that betting in sports should be legalized as it was very difficult to enforce a ban, when he drew the bizarre comparison, “If you can’t prevent rape, enjoy it.”

As the media went to town on the rape remark, Sinha tried to wriggle out saying that he just quoted a proverb to prove his point but his use of the word ‘proverb’ for the rape comment did nothing to stop the pouring of outrage on social forums.

The CBI chief yesterday tried to defend himself again, saying he gave his opinion that betting should be legalized if laws cannot be enforced. It does not mean that laws should not be made. This is as wrong as saying that rape is inevitable and one should lie back and enjoy it. He reiterated his deep sense of regard and respect for women and his commitment for gender issues. He expressed regret.

Sinha is now facing calls to apologize publicly and not regret while CPM MP Brinda Karat asked him to step down. Karat wants CBI boss to face prosecution. Kiran Mazumdar Shaw of Biocon said CBI director has rendered himself unfit to hold this office.

BJP’s Smriti Irani termed the comment as disgusting.

The CBI chief’s epic proverb has angered the social media when rape debate after the horrific gang-rape of a medical student in a moving bus in Delhi last December with calls for change in mindsets.

Unbelievable! tweeted Taslima Nasreen, the noted Bangladesh writer. It is better for the public if CBI is caged and gagged, said Abhijit Majumdar.

Nirmala Sitharaman of BJP asked if Sinha’s family and colleagues in CBI agree with the view.
