Chennai, Oct 11 (): Superstar Rajinikanth, who was supposed to inaugurate the 44th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2013 scheduled for November in Goa, may not be able to do so due to his health issues, organisers said.
IFFI 2013 will be held in Goa from November 20-30. The inaugural ceremony of the 11-day festival will be held at the newly constructed multi-purpose indoor stadium near Goa University.
Vishnu Wagh, vice-chairman, Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG), told they had invited Rajinikanth to inaugurate the festival on November 20. But, the date of inauguration is likely to clash with his (Rajinikanth’s) medical treatment that is scheduled on that date. Although the star wanted to be there for the inauguration, the organisers are not sure about his participation, Wagh said.
When asked about the alternative personalities who would inaugurate the film festival, Wagh said that representatives of the directorate of film festivals were arriving on October 11 and the matter would be finalized then.
The IFFI aims at giving a common platform for the cinemas of the world to project the excellence of the film art; contributing to the understanding and appreciation of film cultures of different nations in the context of their social and cultural ethos; and promoting friendship and cooperation among people of the world.
When asked about the festival, Wagh said, the highest level of people forming the film fraternity feel that the festival should not include ‘popular’ cinema, as they believe that IFFI should stress more on screening serious films.
Wagh said popular films from film industries like Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and Bengali cinema will not be screened in the 10-day long fest beginning from November 20. When popular Bollywood films are shared with serious films, the festival content gets diluted. We only want meaningful films for IFFI, he added.
