Protests erupt ahead of Modi’s visit to Trichy

Trichy, Sep 27 (): Protests erupted in Trichy on Thursday ahead of the visit of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi who visited the city for the first time to address a youth convention of the party at G-corner grounds.

Elaborate security was arranged all over the route from Trichy airport to the venue where he  addressed a massive rally on Thursday. Narendra Modi also visited the ashram of Mata Amritanandamayi at Amritapuri, 80 kilometres from Thiruvananthapuram and received the blessings of the saint on her 60th birthday celebrations.

The Trichy rally followed after the BJP launched a massive rally at Bhopal on Wednesday presenting the ‘Karyakarta Mahakumbh’ in which almost all senior leaders including LK Advani, Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitely, Dr Murli Manohar Joshi Sushma Swaraj, ,Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Ananth Kumar and Venkaiah Naidu took part.

Reports claimed that the people of Tamil Nadu had been looking forward to the day when Narendra Modi would reach Trichy to address the youth wing of BJP on Thursday.

Meanwhile, hundreds of protesters were arrested by the Trichy Police on Thursday for protesting against the visit of the BJP leader on Thursday. The protesters were reportedly taken into custody after they were agitating outside the Collectorate, said the Police. Security was beefed up all over the city and at the airport from where Modi was taken from a secret route to the venue.

Earlier on Thursday, the Trichy Police were pressed into action after a bomb threat call was received by the Office of the Assistant Commissioner of Police  at around 8 pm on Wednesday claiming a bomb has been planted at the dais at the venue from where Narendra Modi was to address the rally. The call later proved to be hoax and no such bomb was found.

Police said that they are trying to trace the number from where the call was made and will soon nab the person who made the hoax call.
