New Delhi, Sep 14 (): Four men convicted in the Delhi gang-rape case were sentenced to death on Friday by a Delhi court. The men were sent to the gallows for their involvement in a brutal attack against a 23-year-old woman on a moving bus on Dec. 16, 2012 which left the woman with severe internal injuries and later succumbed to it.
Judge Yogesh Khanna while announcing the verdict against the four men said that the courts cannot turn a blind eye towards such gruesome crime against a woman which shocked the whole nation. Hearing the death sentence, 20-year-old Vinay Sharma, an assistant at a gym, broke down weeping.
Not bearing the pain, mother of one of the convicts fainted after she heard that her son would be hanged. “My son will die soon,” said Champa Devi who resides in a slum in the national capital. Satisfied with the verdict given in the case, the victim’s father said that he is very happy about the verdict which brought justice at last to his daughter. The victim’s family, who had been meeting politicians and government officials for executing the men, breathed a sigh of relief after the announcement of death penalty was made in the court.
Meanwhile, not happy with the verdict announced by the Delhi court, defense lawyer A.P. Singh said, “This is not the victory of truth. But it is the defeat of justice.”
The case not only triggered nationwide outrage and massive protests all over the country but also forced the government to bring stringent anti-rape laws. Within days of the incident, all men involved in the crime were arrested by the Delhi police.
While four men were convicted on Tuesday by a fast-track court, an 18-year-old who was a juvenile at the time of the incident was convicted in August and will serve the maximum sentence of three years in a reform home. Another one Ram Singh, 33, hanged himself in the prison.
