Victorious women archery team returns home

New Delhi, Aug.27 (ANI): The victorious Indian women’s archery team returned home on Tuesday, after winning the gold medal in World Cup Stage IV crown in Poland.

The archers were however a little disappointed as there was nobody to receive the team at the airport. There were no representatives from the Sports Authority of India (SAI) to welcome the victorious team.

The Indian trio of Bombayala Devi, Deepika Kumari and Rimil Buriuly won back-to-back World Cup titles beating the formidable South Korea in the women’s recurve team final in World Cup Stage IV in Wroclaw, Poland on Sunday.

President of Archery Association of India, Vijay Kumar Malhotra, congratulated the team and said that the next target for the team is the upcoming Asian Games and Olympics Games.

“Last time also they won a gold medal. We are very happy that compound team, men recurve team and women compound team have been regularly performing well. It is because of them India is right now considered one of the leading countries in the world in this sport. Now the next target for the team is the upcoming Asian Games and Olympics Games,” he said.

Malhotra also said the Association is pressing on the inclusion of Archery in the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

“Unfortunately, archery is not part of the Commonwealth Games. Although we tried a lot to consider archery for the Games, all our efforts have gone in vain. Previously in 1980 Australia had considered archery in the Commonwealth Games; after that for 30 years the sport was not considered part of the Commonwealth games. Now we are again trying to and we have also written to the authorities,” he added.

It was the Indian women’s second consecutive World Cup title, following their success in World Cup Stage 3 in Medellin, Colombia last month. (ANI)
