Mumbai, July 21 (): Maharashtra government has granted tax-free status to ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’, the Farhan Akhtar staring biopic on the legendary sportsman Milkha Singh.
On hearing the news Taran Adarsh tweeted, “Maharashtra government grants tax-free status to #BhaagMilkhaBhaag”.
Directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Farhan plays the title role in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag while Sonam Kapoor, Divya Dutta and Prakash Raj feature in small roles in the film.
The film was released on July 12 and the alluring performance of Farhan Akhtar as Milkha Singh has impressed both critics and audiences. The movie received excellent reviews and good word of mouth from the audience. It has earned over Rs 56 crore so far at the domestic market.
Director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra accompanied by Farhan Akhtar met the Maharashtra Revenue Minister Balasaheb Thorat seeking to give entertainment tax on Bhaag Milkha Bhaag so that it could reach a much larger section of audience.
The government has granted tax exemption. They have taken into account the fact that the film has been co-produced by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC).
The government official said that the government has granted the exemption under section 6 (3) of the Maharashtra Entertainment Duty Act 1923 to the film. The tax exemption is valid for the next six months from yesterday and the tax concession has been granted as the main objective of the film was to promote sports among youths.
For Farhan, who is a director, producer, actor and singer, “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag” has been a life-changing experience.
Farhan said he was happy that Milkha Singh liked the film and his performance. Recounting his experience of shooting the biopic, Farhan said that there were many memorable moments on the sets. On narrating one of his experiences, he said when they were shooting a race and Milkhaji happened to be there, it was a fantastic experience as he was in his get-up.
