New Delhi, June 12 (): VC Shukla , who passed away on Tuesday after suffering bullet injuries in a Maoist attack on May 25 in Bastar region in Chhattisgarh, will be cremated at his farmhouse on the outskirts of Raipur today evening.
Eighty-four-year old Congress leader Shukla passed away at the Medanta Medicity Hospital in Gurgaon yesterday after he sustained bullet injuries in the Maoist attack in Chhattisgarh last month.
Shukla’s body was kept at Congress Bhavan on Wednesday morning for people to pay tribute to the Congress leader. State Governor Shekhar Dutt, Chief Minister Dr. Raman Singh with many others paid homage to the departed leader at the Swami Vivekanand Airport in Raipur.
Sources said that Shukla’s body will be taken to Budhapara, where the funeral procession is expected to take place and final rites will be performed at his farm-house with full state honours. As a mark of respect to the great leader, the state government has announced a three-day official mourning.
Born on August 2, 1929 at Raipur, Shukla was part of the Congress’s “parivartan yatra”, that was intended to drive the BJP out of power. In a remarkable act of loyalty, Shukla’s security guard, Praful Shukla who accompanied the Congress convoy on May 25 shot himself dead for failing to save Shukla .
Earlier on the ill-fated day of May 25, heavily -armed Maoists attacked a convoy of Congress leaders in the state’s Bastar district in which twenty-eight people including PCC chief Nand Kumar Patel, his son Dinesh, Mahendra Karma and Uday Mudliyar were killed. Thirty-seven others were also said to be injured in the attack.
Shukla was selected as the Congress Lok Sabha candidate from Mahasamund constituency, for the general elections in 1957 and was successful after winning with a thrashing majority and entered the Parliament of India as one of the youngest Parliamentarians.
