Asked to bat first, Gilchrist gave Kings XI a blazing start with the 50-run mark in the sixth over. Gilchrist was going great with five fours and two towering sixes until he was caught by Pathan off his own bowling in the eight over.
After the initial attack, the Delhi bowlers gave a stop to Punjab’s scoring and restricted them to 103 for two in the 15th over. However, Miller struck three boundaries and four sixes and ensured that Kings XI cross the 170-run mark, hitting Nehra for a four off the last ball.
Chasing a target of 172, Delhi lost three wickets – Unmukt Chand, Irfan Pathan and David Warner – in quick succession with just 12 runs on the board.
Before the fall of fourth wicket, Skipper Mahela Jayawardene (39) and Virender Sehwag (30) shared 49 runs off 40 balls, when the latter edged one to Gilchrist off the bowling of Parvinder Awana. Sehwag did his 22-balls innings with six fours.
A quick 50 runs off 5.3 overs of Jayawardene and Ben Rohrer (49) kept the hopes of Delhi alive. Jayawardene was caught by Manan Vohra to give Sandeep his third wicket of the day. He hit three fours and a six during his 42-ball knock.
Finally, Morne Morkel (13) brought Delhi close with some lusty hitting but the visitors eventually fell short.
