Cannes 2013 : Sonam Kapoor,Vidya Balan take Indian fashion to Cannes red carpet

Mumbai, May 17 (): At the opening of 66th Cannes Film Festival, Bollywood divas Vidya Balan and Sonam Kapoor opted for traditional Indian attires at the red carpet.

Sonam Kapoor appeared in desi style, in a saree for the red carpet on the first day of the ongoing Cannes Film Festival 2013. She looked flawless and stunning on the red carpet. Her dress designed by Anamika Khanna, was a heavily embroidered saree with an elaborate, long and flowy jacket.

The saree was a delicate lace in white. The nine-yard cloth was given a contemporary touch by teaming it with a kundan nath (nose ring) and long gold embroidered cape jacket that had heavy embroidery on it. She wore a nathni (with polki stones), dark maroon lips and dramatic winged eyes, which completed her Indian look. The pretty lass was styled by sister Rhea Kapoor.

At the opening gala dinner, Sonam was seen in a pink Ellie Saab haute fashion design dress. She stuck to the basics and complemented the look with matching accessories, and straight hair.

Vidya Balan’s outfits left absolutely nobody in doubt of her nationality. Vidya has got the rare honour of being on the Cannes jury this year. At the opening ceremony on May 15, she wore a monochrome, embroidered outfit designed by Sabyasachi Mukherjee. The finishing touches to her outfit were given by a heavy gold and diamond necklace, bindi and pallu draped over her head. She accessorized her looks with a namaste and a big smile.

Vidya wore a maroon and black lehenga choli with jhumkas and bindi to a cocktail party that headed the festival.

Her third outfit was also Sabyasachi styled, a white and gold sari with a full-sleeved embellished black blouse. Vidya has worn both – the dark maroon and black collections and the lighter one for the opening ceremony.

This year India is the guest country at Cannes, which was opened by Bollywood mega star Amitabh Bachchan and his ‘The Great Gatsby’ co-star Leonardo DiCaprio. Cannes is celebrating 100 years of Indian cinema and to honour the event, Bachchan addressed the audiences in Hindi.

Amitabh will be joined by his daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and granddaughter Aaradhya at the festival later. Aishwarya’s Cannes outing on the red carpet is a much awaited event for Indian fashion followers.
