New York, May 8 (ANI): An early casting of ‘The Thinker’ by Auguste Rodin was sold for 15.285 million dollars at Sotheby’s in Manhattan on Tuesday.
According to the New York Observer, the sale was part of a major auction of Impressionist and modern art that brought in a total of 230 million dollars.
The sale was a new record for a ‘Thinker’ figure, and beat a price of 12 million dollars for a casting sold in 2010, the New York Post reported.
There are more than two dozen castings of ‘the Thinker’ and the most famous, in bronze, is at a Paris museum.
ArtfixDaily.com reported that another sculpture by Rodin, ‘Ugolino and His Sons, was sold for 965,000 dollars.
The sculptor’s highly respected ‘The Gates of Hell,’ a series of figures based on Dante’s ‘Inferno’ and left unfinished was auctioned off for a total of 16.25 million dollars. (ANI)
