New Delhi, May 3 ():Succumbing to injuries, Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh died yesterday after being attacked by his fellow inmates in jail , a week back at the Lahore jail. Pakistan announced the death of Sarabjit Singh on Thursday who was arrested more than a decade ago when he crossed over to Pakistan on the fateful day of August 1990.
Pakistan declared Sarabjit as a terrorist alleging that he was involved in the blast that rocked Lahore and Multan in which fourteen people were dead. However, the family did not accept this allegation and said that Sarabjit crossed over the border in an inebriated state not realizing the seriousness of the matter.
The death of Sarabjit, who was attacked mercilessly with bricks and plates in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail on April 26, might probably increase the controversy between the two neighbours, said sources.
Condemning the death of Sarabjit, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed his deep anguish and said that he is deeply disappointed by the death of a brave son of the country who bore his evils with courageous fortitude. The Prime Minister also conveyed his regret saying that Pakistan neither responded to the government of India nor the distressed family of Sarabjit.
Home Minister Sushi Kumar Shinde and Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi also conveyed their condolences to Sarabjit’s sister Dalbir Kaur.
According to Pakistani media reports, post-mortem on Sarabjit’s body has been conducted and the body is expected to be flown by an helicopter to Bhikhiwind. With full state honours, the funeral rites will be taking place at around 2 pm on Friday, said sources from the ministry of External affairs.
Pakistan meanwhile has also issued an order to conduct a judicial probe and has directed to complete the probe within fifteen days, said sources from Pakistani foreign ministry.
