Chennai, Apr 26 (): Chennai Police arrested about 40 students near MA Chidambaram Stadium in the city yesterday, after spying on the conversations in their mobile phones.
The students yesterday had planned to take the message of Tamil Eelam to the spectators of IPL match. Wearing T-shirts with the wording – “Want a free Tamil Eelam’, the students had planned to get inside the stadium to spread the message.
But,the Chennai Police foiled their harmless attempt by spying on their mobile phone conversations. When the students had arrived near the stadium, about 200 Police personnel rounded them up and arrested about 40 students. The students were taken into custody at Egmore police station and the police claimed that the students had been arrested taking law and order situation into consideration.
The students were released only after the match got over. Earlier, a student by name Prabhakaran had told The Hindu that his mobile phone was being tapped by the Police which has been proven yesterday without a shade of any doubt.
The Police have no rights to arrest the students when they had embarked on peaceful means to spread their message, without resorting to any means of protest.
The match tickets purchased by the students were also seized by the police. When the students asked the Police to at least refund their ticket money, the police blatantly refused.
The students said that the police have thus acted in connivance with the cricket board.
