Top US general warns of ‘prolonged provocation’ by North Korea under Kim Jong-un

Washington, Apr. 25 (ANI): America’s top military leader has said North Korea is in ever-greater danger of provoking a fight under the leadership of Kim Jong-un.

General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that he thought they were in a period of prolonged provocation with North Korea, a condition that began when Kim Jong-un took over as leader of the military dictatorship from his father in late 2011.

Dempsey said this during a visit to Beijing this week, where Pentagon officials have sought China’s help in convincing Kim to mellow down his confrontational rhetoric, the Christian Science Monitor reports.

In recent weeks members of Congress have accused China, North Korea’s only ally and largest provider of food aid, of not doing enough to rein in Kim.

Dempsey said that on the heels of talks with his counterparts in the Chinese military, he is convinced that they are as worried about Kim’s behaviour as America is.

On Tuesday, the state-controlled North Korean newspaper rejected any suggestion that the country would consider giving up its nuclear programme as a precondition of engaging in talks with the United States.

The chief of staff of the People’s Liberation Army, General Fang Fengshui, said that ‘there is a possibility that’ a North Korea will conduct fourth nuclear test.

According to the report, China has long maintained that the Korean Peninsula should be nuclear-free. General Fang added that “they were totally opposed” to a nuclear test by North Korea.

He said that if North Korea was to launch a missile, America too had the capability to defend itself, its people and its facilities, the report added. (ANI)
