False ‘WH explosions’ tweet by ‘hacked’ AP site wipes $136 bln off US markets

Sydney, Apr 24 (ANI): Associated Press’ Twitter account on has sent a tweet of two explosions in the White House after being targeted by hackers.

The false tweet, sent on Tuesday afternoon, briefly shook US financial markets.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, an official @AP account reported that explosions at the White House injured President Barack Obama.

AP spokesman Paul Colford quickly confirmed the tweet was “bogus,” the report said.

White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters that Obama was fine soon after the tweet went out.

But within three minutes of the tweet’s release, virtually all US markets took a plunge on the false news in what one trader described as “pure chaos”.

According to the report, the tweet briefly wiped out 136.5 billion dollars of the S and P 500 index’s value before markets recovered. (ANI)
