Chennai, Apr 22 () : Ford India would invest $2 million in the Chengalpattu and Sanand plants.
Ford India was showcasing the new Ecosport, when it said that the company was committed to investing in its Indian plants, aiming to make them an export hub apart from catering to the Indian market. Production capacity at its Chengalpattu (Chennai) plant has been powered up by an assembly line and engine manufacturing ability.
The newly installed Sanand plant (Gujarat) would be fully operational next year, with investment of $1 billion. Ford India’s two plants would jointly produce around 4.4 lakh cars a year and 6.10 lakh engines. The company said for exports it would use 25% of the vehicles and 40% of the engines that are manufactured in both the Indian plants.
Ford India was of the view that the slowdown in automotive market was only temporary. It was to add 5000 more jobs to the existing 10,000 workforce. From metros and big cities, Ford has started promotions in tier 2 and tier 3 cities. The connectivity to Ennore Port is another advantage for Ford operations in Chennai.
Ford felt that after tendering an apology over a sexist ad, that showed Paris Hilton driving away with Kardashian sisters in the boot, and the tagline that Figo has an extra boot, the matter was forgotten.
