Mumbai, Apr 21 (): Four policemen including a pedestrian were seriously hit by a speeding luxury car at a check post near Marine Drive. The driver of the car was driving the car at a shattering speed on Marine Drive though not under the influence of alcohol.
While the driver reached the check-post, he lost control on his vehicle which resulted in a clash hitting the policemen on duty and a pedestrian. Police said the injured constables included Suresh Kate, Sainath Dhuri, Amol Kale and Pankaj Khairnar – all the four attached to the Marine Drive police station.
The man who was walking on the pavement was Mubarak Rahimatali Shaikh who also sustained injuries in the accident. The driver who was arrested was booked under several sections of the IPC including rash and negligent driving. Later he was produced in the court, said the police.
Police said that these types of incidents happen very often even after several precautions. The barricades which are placed in zig-zag fashion force the driver to slow down the speed but still the system does not work, said a police official. In the past nine months, ten such incidents have occurred, said the police.
Such incidents are nowadays causing panic as some of them are either driving under the influence of alcohol or some resort to rash driving and the policemen have to become the prey for these motorists, said a constable with Gamdevi police station who was hit by a BMW near Jaslok hospital on April 8 and has not yet recovered from the injuries.
A few months back, assistant police inspector, Balaji Dahifude was hit by a motorist who rammed into him at a temporary check point, while trying to flee.
On January 26 this year, 31 police personnel were hit by a speeding tanker which rammed into their vehicle on the Western Express Highway, said a police officer.
