Siliguri, April 17 (ANI): Senior leader of the Communist party of India- Marxist (CPI-M), Ashok Bhattacharya on Wednesday held the West Bengal state government responsible for the chaining of student leader Santosh Sahani.
Blaming the ruling Trinamool Congress, he said, “This is totally unconstitutional, uncivilized and unprecedented. The Trinamool Congress government is totally responsible for this. We want punishment. This is a crime committed by this government.”
Earlier on Monday, Sahani, who was in judicial custody, fell ill and had to be admitted to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital near Siliguri.
Another CPI (M) leader, Brinda Karat said that it was an attack on a citizen’s basic right to protest against the government.
Brinda Karat said “It’s not just a violation of human rights; it’s an attack on the basic citizen’s right to protest against this government. He should not have been arrested in the first place. Therefore, what we also say is that, what is the use of a minister simply saying that I don’t know anything about it? Who was responsible for it, and will action be taken against them?”
Last week, police baton charged protesters after TMC members clashed with the supporters of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M).
Around 25 CPI-M members, including senior leaders Ashok Bhattacharya and Jibesh Sarkar , were detained at the party office. (ANI)
