Mumbai, Apr 11 (): Actress Rani Mukerji is teaming up with Yash Raj Films (YRF) for the movie `Mardaani` in which she is taking the boldest avatar as a police officer.
The 35-year-old star has portrayed a variety of roles in her career spanning over 15 years, but this is the first time that Rani is playing a cop. The movie will be directed by Pradeep Sarkar, produced by Aditya Chopra and star Rani in the lead role.
A source said that Mardaani would be the boldest movie till date under the YRF banner. Pradeep had earlier directed Rani in Laaga Chunari Mein Daag.
Mardaani is a female-oriented project and the story of the film will be one of the boldest, grittiest subjects YRF has ever dealt with. Pradeep Sarkar is known for making family-centric and romantic films but in this film, he will be seen working on a new, unexplored theme.
Pradeep Sarkar is working with YRF for the second time, the first being Laaga Chunari Mein Daag: Journey Of A Woman (2007), in which Rani played the lead role.
Rani Mukerji has earlier worked with Yash Raj Productions in Dil Bole Hadippa, in which she pretended to be a man so as to be a part of the cricket team.
Aditya Chopra and his team personally selected Rani Mukerji after going through the script, as they have thought that she would suit the role in the best possible way.
The star cast of the film is not yet finalised, but sources say that it may not feature a male lead role. By seeing the proceedings, Mardaani might not see a hero as the movie is a woman-centric film, Rani will be doing the main character and the film will be on her shoulders.
Mardaani will go on floor by the last quarter of the year and is slated for a 2014 release worldwide.
