Mumbai, Apr 1 (): The box office collection of Bollywood movie Himmatwala, which stars Ajay Devgn and Tamanna in the lead roles, in its first weekend of release is 31 crore, reports say.
The movie has collected Rs 31.1 crores nett at the domestic market in the first weekend and its breakup is Rs 12.1 cr on Friday, Rs 8.5 cr on Saturday and Rs 10.5 cr on Sunday. The collection on Sunday witnessed a drop of 13% from Friday.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted film’s business and wrote, “Himmatwala collected approx Rs 31.1 cr nett in its opening weekend. Breakup: Fri 12.1 cr, Sat 8.5 cr, Sun 10.5 cr.”
Himmatwala is the remake movie of the 1983 Blockbuster romantic-action of the same name. The movie was released on March 29, Friday, a public holiday. It was a solo release on that day, but still the movie failed to do well at the domestic box office. Trade analysts said the business was better in North Indian circuits, while the business was poor in the South Indian circuits including Mumbai.
The opening weekend collection of Himmatwala has failed to crash the record of Ajay’s last release Son of Sardar. SOS was released on Diwali along with Shahrukh Khan’s Jab Tak Hain Jaan. But, SOS managed to rake in Rs 39.15 crores nett in three days despite having a tough competition with Jab Tak Hain Jaan.
Despite promoting massively by the makers of the movie and the film hitting a record breaking number of screens across the country being a single release on March 29, the collection of the movie was not up to the expected mark. Its collection should have been double of what it has earned now.
Taran tweeted, “In view of the fact that UTV has given #Himmatwala a wide release, the weekend numbers are shockingly low.” Himmatwala also witnessed poor performance in the overseas market.
However, original Himmatwala, which featured Jitendra and Sridevi, topped collection charts.
