New Delhi, Mar 20 (): Pacifying DMK chief M Karunanidhi, Congress president Sonia Gandhi made a final effort by disapproving the killings of Tamils in Sri Lanka and demanded an independent and reliable probe into the rights of Tamils in the island.
At a meeting held in the Parliament house in New Delhi on Tuesday, Sonia Gandhi said that the dilemma of the Sri Lankan Tamils is very close to her hearts. Expressing distress over the awful slaughter on innocent civilians and children during the last few days of the clash in 2009, Sonia Gandhi claimed that an independent and reliable probe is required into the violation of human rights in Sri Lanka.
The Congress party has stood firm supporting for the cause of Tamils’ rights and protection from the days of Indiraji and Rajivji, said the Congress President. Sonia Gandhi claimed that the Congress is immensely moved by the way the Tamils’ legal and political rights were snatched from them.
Responding on the harassment caused to the Indian fishermen who were held or fired by the Sri Lankan navy, Sonia Gandhi said that the matter has gone out of control and the need to keep a full stop to the daily violence against the fishermen has become essential. It is also believed that the ruling government at the centre is drafting a resolution to be brought in Parliament.
A shortwhile after the DMK chief M Karunanidhi announced his decision to withdraw support to the UPA government, a meeting by the Congress Core Group was held in which the leaders decided to consider the suggestion made by the DMK .
Meanwhile, the DMK president has also claimed that the party will reconsider its decision if the UPA government gives a nod and amend the resolution against Sri Lanka.
