Sydney, Mar 4 (ANI): The father of Oscar Pistorius, the Paralympian who shot his girlfriend dead on Valentine’s Day, has said the ruling African National Congress (ANC) government is to be blamed for the growing number of crimes especially against the white people.
Henke Pistorius said he and other members of his family owned guns because they could not rely on the police to protect them, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.
Henke laid the blame for South Africa’s violent crime rates, which are among the highest in the world, with 15,000 people murdered last year, on the ANC government.
Pistorius’ dad also singled out crime against white South Africans, and he made his comments after it was disclosed that the Paralympic star’s father, grandfather and uncles owned 55 guns between them.
As well as the 9mm gun Pistorius used to shoot his girlfriend Steenkamp, he had applied for licences for six more firearms, the paper reported.
The Bladerunner insisted during a bail application in court last week that he shot Steenkamp through a locked toilet door believing her to be a burglar.
Prosecutors said he gunned down the 29-year-old model after she fled to the bathroom following a row.
Henke said the family were firearms collectors and hunters, but also needed guns for self-defence, adding some of the guns are for hunting and some are for protection: the hand guns.
Henke added it speaks to the ANC government, adding look at white crime levels, why protection is so poor in this country, and you can’t rely on the police because crime is so rife.
Henke said he had never had to use a gun in self-defence, but added that doesn’t mean he hasn’t been hijacked, attacked, but as a family, they value life much too much to produce guns at every opportunity.
An Afrikaans-language newspaper, had earlier reported that Henke Pistorius, Oscar’s grandfather Hendrik, and his uncles Arnold, Theo and Leo owned 55 shotguns and handguns between them. (ANI)
