New Delhi, Jan.26 (ANI): President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday awarded of one Kirti Chakra and ten Shaurya Chakras to army personnel at an investiture ceremony held on the occasion of India’s 64th Republic Day.
The Kirti Chakra was conferred on Major Anup Joseph Manjali of the Bihar Regiment/24th battalion of the Rashtriya Rifles.
Major Anup Joseph Manjali is a brave, dynamic and fearless officer commanding ‘Sutrun Company’ of 24 RR (BIHAR). He led his company column under extreme adverse terrain and weather conditions during the Battalion Level Operation in Jammu and Kashmir, launched on 30 September 2012.
On 1 October 20 12 at 3:30 hours, he achieved total surprise in establishing close cordon around a Dhok in which five hardcore foreign terrorist leaders were hiding from the heavily forested side. At first light, the officer displaying raw courage crawled upto the entrance of the Dhok and lobbed a Hand Grenade to flush out the terrorists resulting in elimination of one terrorist on the spot.
Other terrorists ran out towards the forest firing indiscriminately in order to break contact. The officer sensing danger to his troops displayed utmost presence of mind, utter disregard to personal safety and engaged the fleeing terrorists in a close quarter battle. After closing in on them, he shot dead two more dreaded terrorists from a distance of approximately twenty meters in a most daring act.
The officer exhibited singular act of bravery under heavy terrorist fire.
The ten Shaurya Chakras were conferred on Havildar Vir Singh and Major Sandeep Kumar of the 13th battalion of the Sikh Regiment, Major Manish Punj of the Rajpur Regiment/10th battalion of the Rashtriya Rifles, Captain A. Rahul Ramesh of the Corps of Engineers/72nd Road Construction Company (Posthumous), Captain Dinesh Kumar of the 9th battalion of Madras Regiment, Lieutenant Manish Singh of the 9th battalion of the Parachute Regiment (Special Forces), Subedar Pradeep Beck of the Bihar Regiment/24th battalion of the Rashtriya Rifles, Naik Rajeshver Singh of the 16th battalion of the Punjab Regiment (Posthumous), Naik Anil Kumar of the 16th battalion of the Punjab Regiment. (Posthumous), Naik Krishan Kumar of the Brigade of the Guards/13th Sikh Light Infantry battalion group (Posthumous). (ANI)
