Mumbai, Jan 24 ():24-year-old Prema Jayakumar who topped the nation-wide Chartered Accountancy exam in her first attempt was showered with praise for her outstanding performance by political leaders in Tamil Nadu. Shipping Minister G K Vasan had announced an award of Rs. five lakh for the girl on Wednesday.
Prema Jayakumar, daughter of an auto-rickshaw driver expressed her happiness over her success after the results were declared yesterday. Congratulating the girl who lives at Malad in Mumbai, DMK president M Karunanidhi also announced Rs. one lakh award for her.
The dream has come true for the young girl’s family who migrated from Villupuram in Tamil Nadu to Mumbai in search of a livelihood two decades ago. Prema’s father who is an auto driver managed the family earning Rs 15,000 every month. Living in a chawl with four family members in a 300 sq ft room, the girl has achieved success, said the neighbours.
Prema after achieving success against all odds is now determined to use this milestone as a ladder towards victory providing her parents with a comfortable life as her father has strived all through his life for the sake of the family. She wants her father to rest at home who had been driving autorickshaw for the past two decades.
Prema scored 90 per cent in her third year B Com exam and stood second in the University of Mumbai. She also expressed her gratitude to the professors at her college and coaching institute, who had struggled hard with her.
Prema’s brother Dhanraj was also equally brilliant like Prema. Dhanraj started supporting the family as he grew up by working in a call centre to save on registration fees for his exam and cleared his CA exam this year along with his sister in his first attempt.
Prema said that she used to study from 7.30 am till 12 midnight. Before going to bed she used to watch TV for half an hour just for relaxation.
