Mohali, Jan 24 (): India has defeated England by 5 wickets to get an assessable lead 3-1 in the five-match ODI series in Mohali yesterday.
Chasing a target of 258 to win, Rohit Sharma made 83 from 93 balls and Suresh Raina made 89 not out from 79 balls that helped India to register the win with 15 balls to spare. They put on 68 runs partnership for the fourth wicket, hitting fluently all over the ground. Rohit Sharma’s 83 came with eleven boundaries and one sixer. Raina hit nine 4′s and one sixer in his unbeaten 89.
Earlier Gautam Gambhir opened the innings with Rohit Sharma. They made just 10 runs before he was caught by Jos Buttler of Breshnan. Virat Kohli made 26 from 33 balls and made a crucial 52 runs partnership with Rohit Sharma for the second wicket.
Yuvraj Singh made just 3 runs, and the next batsman Dhoni made 19 runs, partnered with Raina for 55 run stand for the fifth wicket. James Tredwell took three wickets and Finn, Breshnan and Dernbach took one wicket each.
Earlier, India won the toss and put England into bat, Alastair Cook made 76, Kevin Pietersen 76, and a quick fire of unbeaten 57 by Joe Root guided an England to a moderate total of 257 for 7 in allotted fifty overs. England batsmen put 100 runs in the last ten overs.
Spinner Ravindra Jadeja took 3 wickets for 39, Ashwin took 2 wickets for 63 runs. Ishant Sharma who bowled two maidens in ten overs took 2 wickets for 47.
With this victory India retains the top spot in ODI rating.
