Nitin Gadkari resigns, Rajnath Singh to become BJP president

New Delhi, Jan 23 (): After high drama in the BJP on the eve of election of a new party president earlier, Rajnath Singh who had been a former BJP president as well as the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister had been appointed as the next BJP Chief and the RSS too have accepted Singh’s nomination.

BJP top leaders who arranged for a meeting to discuss the issue at Arun Jaitely’s house decided to appoint Rajnath Singh as the next president of the party.

The party was earlier under pressure to find an appropriate party chief after Nitin Gadkari ‘s alleged involvement in the Puti scam made some of the party members to argue that installing Gadkari one again in the highest post might probably dent the party’s credibility in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2014.

Till last evening, Mr Gadkari who was confident for getting the second term as the party president, submitted his resignation to the party high command saying that till he proves himself and comes out clean he will not take up the position.

Gadkari was quoted saying that he does not want the party to suffer due to him as investigation is still in process which made him avoid taking the highest position of the party post.

Claiming that he is not involved with any of the corrupt organizations, Gadkari said he will prove his innocence and let the world know that false allegations were imposed against him. Gadkari also said that he will give his full support to the new party president.

Earlier party senior leader LK Advani who was against Gadkari’s candidature suggested Sushma Swaraj to take the position but after prolonged discussions, the party came to a conclusion that Rajnath Singh will be the right choice.

The BJP parliamentary board is likely to meet today and declare the former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Rajnath Singh to be the next BJP president.  Nitin Gadkari has resigned his president’s post.
