Mumbai, Jan 19 (): ‘Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola’ has garnered Rs. 33.15 crore net at the domestic box office and Rs. 8 crore from the overseas market, thus making the worldwide collection at Rs. 41.15 crore.
Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola (MKBKM) is co-produced and directed by Vishal Bhardwaj; the film stars Pankaj Kapur, Imran Khan, Anushka Sharma in pivotal roles and is made at a budget of about Rs. 33 crores.
The movie collected Rs 26 lakhs on Thursday previews and Rs 6.76 cr on Friday, thus rounding off the opening day collections to Rs. 7 crore. In its first weekend, the movie collected Rs. 22.42 crore. It showed a downward trend in its collection on the weekdays. But, managed to add Rs 10.75 crores to its first week domestic collection, Rs 33.17 crores nett.
The collections are not considered as ‘not so great’ for a film that was made with quite a few notable names and that was extensively promoted and even promised to give 2013 a good kick-start. MKBKM, which was hyped as 2013’s first big release, could not make a great mark at the box office.
But Bhardwaj is very happy with the results, he said that the movie is his biggest opening and appreciation is coming from all sides and from a lot of people. After seeing the decent collections he is really happy and relieved about the fact that he is able to make the kind of movie that he wants to make and still have a profitable film.
The first week collections have covered up the budget of the movie and fetched a good price for Music, Home Video and Satellite rights, thus making Matru Bhardwaj’s highest grossing movie.
Critics have lauded the performance of Pankaj Kapur and the superb acting of Shabana Azmi in the film. The two veterans are supported by young stars Imran Khan, Anushka Sharma and Arya Babbar.
