Chennai, Jan 8 (): Kamal Haasan might yield to pressure from exhibitors;he is likely to postpone Vishwaroopam release on DTH and postpone the theatrical release to January 25.
In a latest decision, Kamal Haasan and exhibitors are scheduled to meet in the evening. Vishwarooopam press ads have come with theatre names in it and advance bookings start tomorrow. The actor is also facing boycott in Andhra, Karnataka and Mumbai since the film’s Hindi and Telugu versions are to released on DTH. Kerala is not affected as the Tamil version is released by Rajkamal Films, the banner of the actor.
Yet another factor is that two Tamil films starring Karthi and another with Santhanam have been booked by almost all the theatres much earlier while Vishwaroopam was caught in the DTH controversy. In Chennai, the film has got few multiplexes and more screens in the suburbs.
Kamal filed a police complaint that he received threats that the theatres screening his film would face attacks and power disruptions and that print boxes would be blocked from reaching the theatres.
Theatre owners have appealed to the TN CM Dr Jayalalithaa to prevail upon the actor to defer his decision to screen the film on DTH platform.
DTH players are yet to get the film’s digital version but Sun Direct has sent out pamphlets through newspapers asking subscribers to pay Rs 1000 as recharge to see Vishwaroopam on Jan 10 at 9.30 pm and to contact the call centre The number given is constantly engaged. Other DTH player executives are waiting for the actor to deliver the film and then go in for publicity.
Earlier, a controversy over the title Saandiyaar arose and the actor faced the ire of the dalits who felt that it was to boost the image of the thevars. This issue went before Jayalalithaa who was the CM. He hoped to get her nod to retain the title but instead she told him plainly that she cannot give any police protection and that if there was any communal problem due to this film it would be yanked off. He then changed the title to Virumaandi.
