Rajinikanth, the badshah of Kollywood: Career Highlights

Chennai, Jan 4 (): Rajinikanth, the one and only Super Star has made a mark in the film industry with his unique style, speed, mannerisms and distinctive punch dialogues. He has over 150 films to his credit in Tamil and in various languages like Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi and Bengali.

Though we all know Rajinikanth as the unbeaten Super Star of the film industry, this article is aimed at taking you through the landmark events in his film career, spanning from the year 1975.

Career Highlights

His film, Muthu directed by KS Ravikumar became the first Tamil film to be dubbed into Japanese. The film grossed a record $1.6 million in Japan in 1988. Muthu in Japan became such a success story that Newsweek, an American magazine, observed in its 1999 article that “Rajinikanth had supplanted Leonardo Di Caprico as Japan’s trendiest heartthrob.” Muthu even found a mention in a speech by  Manmohan Singh as a force building a positive rapport between the two promising super powers in 2006.

Chandramukhi is the longest running Tamil film, that played on cinema screens  for more than 800 days.

Shivaji was one of the biggest releases for an Indian film worldwide. It blew its way into the top ten films of the UK, upon its release.

His life is featured in a lesson in CBSE class VI English textbook as a lesson titled “From Bus Conductor to Superstar” under the category, Dignity of Work -the one and only kind for a film celebrity.

Superstar’s film, Endhiran is taken as a case study to examine cinematic businesses by the prestigious school,IIM Ahmedabad in  2011.

Rajinikanth’s science fiction film, Endhiran (2010) is the most expensive Indian film ever made, eventually becoming the highest-grosser in India of its time. Rajinikanth was paid a whopping fee of  45 crores for the film.

Rajini has played a cameo role in the Bollywood science-fiction film Ra. One (2011) alongside Shahrukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor.

Chandramukhi and Sivaji were also released in South Africa, where they eventually became high box-office grossers.

Rajinikanth became a phenomenon when he found his way into an Ipad and iPhone running iOS 3.2.2 or higher versions. The application called Rajini SB designed by TOMel  comes packed with his powerful punch dialogues as well as hilarious “English” dialogues from the Superstar’s Tamil film career.

Awards & Honours

Rajinikanth has a string of awards and honours to his credit for many of his Tamil films. Filmfare Award (1984), MGR Award (1989),Tamil Nadu State Film Award (1995,1999,2005 & 2007) are some of the notable honours and he has been chosen as the Indian Entertainer of the Year for 2007 by NDTV.

The greatest award was the Padma Bhushan award (2000) bestowed on him by the Government of India.

He was awarded “The Entertainer of the Decade” by NDTV (2010) and named the most influential person of India (2010) by Forbes India.
