‘Visionary’ Narasimha Rao helped India to withstand global crisis: Mukherjee

Hyderabad, Dec 31 (ANI): President Pranab Mukherjee on Monday said that the country is presently getting the benefits of the economic and foreign policies introduced by former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao.

“History will remember Narasimha Rao for providing leadership to the country at a critical juncture,” he said, while delivering the P.V. Narasimha Rao Memorial Lecture here.

President Mukherjee said the former prime minister took bold decisions to introduce economic reforms at a crucial juncture, and added that those reforms helped the nation to withstand the global crisis.

The President also recalled his association with Rao, saying ‘with a great vision, he introduced the Look East policy and it strengthened our foreign policy’.

The President said that Narasimha Rao was a leader who inspired many. He stated that he too was one of them.

President Mukherjee said that he had the opportunity to work with the former Prime Minister for many years and was impressed by his political sagacity, his depth of comprehension of complex issues and his steely resolve to find solutions to even the most intractable of them.

President Mukherjee said that Narasimha Rao would be remembered for his many contributions to the nation foremost amongst which, in his opinion, was his sterling success in taking the nation to the next level of reforms in 1991.

“He would be remembered as a great leader of our country and one who showed the courage of conviction in leading the nation through the right path of reforms against the heaviest odds,” he said.

Andhra Pradesh Governor E S L Narasimhan, Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy and Tamil Nadu Governor K. Rosaiah were also present on the occasion. (ANI)
