Asian Hockey Champions Trophy: India beat Pakistan 2-1, enters finals

Doha, Dec 25 (): India beat its arch rival Pakistan 2-1 in the Asian Champions Trophy at Al-Rayyan Stadium, Doha on Monday. India entered the finals after the emphatic win over arch-rival Pakistan.

Rupinder Singh and Chenglansena netted for India, where as Waqas Mohammed scored the only goal for Pakistan. This is India’s fourth consecutive win in the Asian Champions Trophy. In the first match it defeated China 4-0 and Japan 3-1 in the second match. It trounced Oman 11-0 in the third match.

In the fourth match, India over-powered Pakistan in a hard fought game. Rupinder Pal Singh converted a penalty stroke in 36th minute for the first goal of the highly fought match (1-0).

In the high-voltage match, seven penalty corners were given, four for India’s favour and 3 in Pakistan favour.

In the 51st minute Chenglesena converted a good pass from Gurwinder Chandi into the nets to take India to 2-0 lead. Pakistan’s Waqas Mohammed scored the Pakistan’s lone goal collecting the rebound ball of Indian goalkeeper in the penalty corner, to narrow the margin. The Indians protested against the goal as it was tapped from shoulder-high, but the umpires stood their ground.

Indian ace striker Raghunath received yellow card warning from the umpire, however India was holding the lead till the end.

India, confirmed its place in the finals, will meet Malaysia on 26th in their last match, while Pakistan will meet Japan in the do or die situation. Pakistan was held by Malaysia 3-3 in their last match. In the earlier match Pakistan beat Oman 8-3 and China 5-2.

India now leads the table with four wins.

The round robin league top two teams will clash for the titles on 27th. The six teams taking part in the tournament are India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Oman, China and Japan.
