Singer Nithyashree’s husband Mahadevan commits suicide

Chennai, Dec 20 (): Mahadevan, husband of famous Carnatic singer Nithyashree Mahadevan, committed suicide on Thursday, 20th December by jumping into the Adyar River in the afternoon hours.

Police reports say Mahadevan, 45-year old, reached Kotturpuram Bridge in his white Honda City car, driven by his driver, around 1pm. A policeman at the scene said he asked his driver to stop and stepped out of the car, talking on his mobile phone. Later, he jumped into Adyar River.

People who were seeing him jumping into the river off the bridge called the rescue and fire services. Rescuers pulled him off the river after an hour long search and was immediately taken in an ambulance to a private hospital around 1.30pm. The doctors declared him dead.

Sources said the body of Mahadevan has been sent to Royapettah Government Hospital for autopsy. A case has been registered by the police and further investigations are underway.

About 2.30pm, few policemen visited Nithyashree’s house in Kotturpuram and informed her about the incident. Ten minutes later, one daughter of the couple was brought from her school. She ran into the house, crying. Relatives and friends have been visiting the house since the incident.

The news has shocked Chennai city, which has been celebrating the annual Margazhi music festival. Nithyasree is also performing at various sabhas for this year’s Margazhi music festival. She was scheduled to give a performance on Thursday evening at the Rama Rao Kalyana Mantap.

Mahadevan is survived by his wife Nithyashree and two daughters. Nithyashree is a popular figure in classical music field and renowned classical singer late D.K. Pattammal’s granddaughter.

Nithyashree is popular both as a Carnatic vocalist and also she has done few numbers in films like Ayirathil Oruvan, Anandha Thandavam, Samurai and few more. Her performance in the sabhas are always remarkable.
