US School shooting: 26 including 20 children killed

Newtown, Dec 15 (): A gunman fired in a Connecticut elementary school on Friday killing 26 including 20 children. The deadly shooting occurred at Sandy Hook elementary school at about 9.40 am.

Reports said that the gunman walked into a classroom where his mother was a teacher. After killing her mother, he shot 18 students in that classroom. Early reports named 24-year-old Ryan Lanza as the gunman, but officials identified the suspected shooter as his brother 20-year-old Adam Lanza and said he was found dead inside the school. Reports said that he was armed with four weapons and wore a bullet-proof vest. The shootings took place in two rooms within a single section of the school.

Authorities said, there were three guns: a .223 caliber “Bushmaster” rifle and two pistols, a Sig Sauer and a Glock. Police recovered firearms Glock and Sig Sauer handguns which were registered to the alleged shooter’s mother and a third gun was registered to Ms. Lanza.

18 children were dead at the school, and two died after being taken to hospital. Six adults, including the school’s principal were also killed, and the gunman killed himself on the spot. Police while searching the classrooms for the shooter found the gunman, who was dead by his own hand.

The children were taken away from the school and others across the district are on lock-down as a preventive measure.

President Obama in his most emotional speech said, “They had their entire lives ahead of them: birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own” wiping the corner of his eye.

In Washington, around 200 people held a candlelight watch for the victims outside the White House, while others protested there to call for gun controls.

This was the second deadliest shoot out in U.S. history, after the rampage that killed 32 students at the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg in July.
