Star India to launch Jalsha Movies channel for Bengali films

Delhi, Dec 13 (): Star India is expanding its offering in the Bengali space with the launch of a dedicated Bengali movie channel called Jalsha Movies, on December 16. This channel will screen movies ranging from latest blockbusters to classic super hits.

The channel has signed up West Bengal’s favourite superstar Dev as its brand ambassador. The channel kick-starts with the premier of the recently released hit Bengali movie Awara starring Jeet, the company said in a statement.

Already, the company runs the top regional entertainment channel STAR Jalsha in the market, which was launched in the Bengali space four years ago. Now, STAR Jalsha movies will be the channel’s second venture in the Bengali space.

According to a source, the channel has put an exclusive five-year deal with one of the biggest production houses of West Bengal to source the blockbusters.

The channel will be available on the DTH platform and with all the cable operators in the state. However, the packages for the availability of the channel are not yet finalised. It will be a pay channel, right from its launch. This will be one of the biggest brands to be launched in the Bengal market.

Kevin Vaz, President and General Manager – Star Jalsha and President – Ad Sales at Star India said that they are happy to launch Jalsha Movies with a promise of bringing the best of Bengali blockbusters to their audience.

Jalsha Movies is an extension of their commitment to constantly delight viewers by offering the best in entertainment. They are in an effort to redefine the pleasure of watching movies by bringing the biggest movie hall in Bengal to every Bengali home.

The company said it has been acquiring television rights of Bengali movies in the past few years and has a library of nearly 350 movies.

Sony Pictures Entertainment also runs Bengali movie channel Sony Aath, which was launched in 2008. Recently, in September Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) had also launched a Bengali movie channel.
