Mumbai, Dec 11 (): Demanding permission to build a memorial for the late Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray at Shivaji Park, the Sena workers on Monday night damaged the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) ward office in South Mumbai after the BMC objected to the temporary structure of the Sena chief terming it to as illegal. Tight security has been provided to all twenty-four BMC wards across the city after eight people were injured in last night’s incident.
Considering the structure as a Samadhi Sthal (memorial) of the departed Sena leader the Sena workers are refusing to vacate the area even after the BMC issued a notice to Mayor Sunil Prabhu and Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut last week directing to remove the temporary structure from Shivaji Park immediately or face legal consequences.
The BMC in its notice pointed that permission for the structure was granted for only a day on Nov 18 on the day of Mr Thackeray’s funeral which the party has not yet removed. Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said that it cannot do anything regarding Sena’s demand to build a memorial at the cremation site as the matter with regard to Shivaji Park has been declared as a silence zone and the case is in pending in the High court.
Mr Raut however refused removing the temporary structure claiming that the site of Mr Thackeray’s cremation was like a “temple” for Shiv Sainiks and objected to dismantle the structure until the government allows erecting the memorial of Mr Thackeray at Shivaji Park.
“We consider it as a temple of the late leader and will not permit anyone to remove the structure from the cremation site. We are not saying it a memorial but we need a memorial for our great leader at Shivaji Park,” admitted Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut and also requested the government and court to keep away from the issue.
Eighty-six year old Sena leader who was cremated on Nov 18 at Shivaji Park the place where he had been giving speech for the past forty years during Dussehra function due to which the Sena demands a memorial in memory of its leader.
