London, Dec 4 (): St James’s Palace made the announcement on Monday, saying that Prince William’s wife, the Duchess of Cambridge — formerly Kate Middleton is pregnant.
The office statement said The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Harry and members of both families are delighted with the news.
Kate spent several hours at the hospital on Monday. She is thought to be under 12 weeks pregnant.
The palace said the duchess’ pregnancy is in its early stages, but there is no detail about the due date of the baby. She is likely to be receiving fluids intravenously to tackle the acute morning sickness.
The 30-year-old duchess is expected to stay in the central London hospital for several days and will require a period of rest afterward. The news came just days after the duchess, on a royal appearance, was playing field hockey with schoolchildren at her former school.
The couple, who are both 30 and officially known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, married in April last year. The gap between the couple’s marriage and Kate’s pregnancy — a full 19 months — stands in contrast to the November 1981 announcement Diana and Charles made a mere three months after their nuptials that they were with child.
William, Queen Elizabeth’s grandson, is second in line to the British throne after his father, Prince Charles, so the couple’s first child would normally become the third in succession when he or she is born. The pregnancy comes after a 2011 decision by the leaders of Britain and the 15 Commonwealth nations endorsing new rules that give girls equal status with boys in the order of succession.
Prime Minister David Cameron wrote on Twitter that he was “delighted by the news…They will make wonderful parents.” US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle also congratulated the royal couple.
