Chennai, Dec 1 (): Vijay’s Thuppakki has become the biggest hit of 2012. The film released on Diwali day did an overwhelming business crossing the 100 crore mark at the box office. Thus, Thuppakki has turned out to be the highest-ever grossing film of Vijay’s film career.
‘Thuppakki’ has become the second Tamil film ever to enter the 100 crore club and had earned the name “blockbuster hit”. Rajinikanth’s 2010 blockbuster ‘Endhiran’ was the first movie in Tamil to enter into the elite Rs 100 crore club.
Thuppakki was released on November 13, Diwali day. The movie earned a whooping amount of 9.25 crore on its opening day and collected 22.15 crore at the Tamil box office in the first three days.
The movie earned 65.32 crore in its long 6-day opening week. Out of this whopping amount, the film fetched 45 crore from Tamil Nadu alone. The film reached the 100 crore mark in just 11 days of its release, on November 23.
The news was delivered in the official page of ‘Thuppakki’ on Twitter, which was later retweeted by director AR Murugadoss, “Yes bullets, it is now officially confirmed that #Thuppakki has crossed the 100cr mark! It is only the second Tamil film ever to do so.”
While the Bollywood releases, Shahrukh Khan’s “Jab Tak Hai Jaan” and Ajay Devgn’s “Son of Sardaar” were excepted broadly before the release of the movies to make their way into the elite 100 crore club, the Tamil movie Thuppakki had no such expectations before its release.
Thuppakki, which stars Vijay, Kajal Aggarwal and Vidyut Jamwal in lead roles has not only made wonderful collection at domestic box office but also in other parts of the world. It was released worldwide in over 1000 screens. The film got only limited number of screens abroad due to the release of Bollywood movies like Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Son of Sardar. However, the movie has made good business overseas in the UK, US and other regions.
