Ahmedabad, Nov 18 (): After follow-on, England Captain Alastair Cook made unbeaten 74 at stumps as the England made a comeback in the second innings against India on Day 3 in the first Test in Ahmedabad on Saturday.
Nick Compton unbeaten on 34 partnered with the skipper as England replied 111 for no loss, on the third day, still behind by 219 runs.
The third day’s play started with Pietersen and Cook resuming the first innings trailing the Indian score of 521 for 8 by 480 runs. After resuming 41 for 3, England needed 322 to avoid follow-on, were bundled out for 191 in the first innings. Ojha took five wickets for 45 and Ravichandran Ashwin took three wickets.
Left-arm spinner Ojha claimed his career`s fourth five-wicket haul. England recovered from 97 for 7 to finish 191 all out. Wicket keeper Prior top scored with 48 runs for England. Stuart Broad made a quick-fire 25 from 23 balls.
India made a comfortable 330 runs lead in the first innings and MS Dhoni enforced the follow-on. Neither Ojha, nor other spinner Ashwin could give the England openers any problems in the second innings as they did in the first innings.
England still have a huge task on hand and their first job on Sunday would be to wipe out the first-innings deficit.
Earlier, India had a tremendous second day with middle order batsman Cheteshwar Pujara leading the way with a brilliant double hundred. He made 206 runs from 389 balls with 21 fours.
