Shinde asks states to make realistic assessment of manpower for better policing

Bangalore, Nov. 16 (ANI): Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on Friday said state governments should make a realistic assessment of manpower requirement to ensure better policing.

Addressing the 25th Southern Zonal Council meeting here, Shinde discussed geo-political issues of importance to the southern states, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry, and highlighted the need for strengthening police organisations.

“There is also an urgent need to make a realistic assessment of the manpower requirement for better police administration. The state governments need to gear up the police organisations keeping in view the emergent specialized functional requirement for the better policing and to take expeditious steps in regard to the better manpower planning and implementation,” said Shinde.

“Special measures need to be taken for the protection of women and children. The Ministry of Woman and Child Development, in consultation of MHA is developing a national portal for tracking of missing children and an active participation of all concerned authorities is required,” Shinde added.

He said the Centre and state governments must coordinate closely to provide a better police administration.

“Need is to emphasise that we must work together renew and strengthen this institutions, meet more frequently, discuss various current and emerging issues of common interest and resolve them in the spirit of cooperative federalism to provide a better centre-state and inter-state relation in our country,” he said.

Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy, Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangaswamy and Kerala’s Finance Minister K Mani were present at the meeting.

Coastal security, the strengthening of the drug control machinery and development of industrial corridors in the peninsular region were other issues discussed. (ANI)
