Seven injured in Old Hyderabad violence

Hyderabad, Nov.16 (ANI): At least seven people were injured during incidents of stone pelting near Charminar in the walled city of Hyderabad on Friday.

Media reports said that clashes broke out soon after Friday prayers at the historic Mecca Masjid.

Witnesses said the incident took place after policemen and paramilitary personnel stopped Muslims from proceeding to the Charminar to offer ‘salam’ at a religious symbol next to the monument.

Angry Muslims then raised slogans against the security personnel and called for the restrictions to be lifted.

Protestors threw stones at the policemen and paramilitary personnel, and damaged a couple of vehicles and some shops.

A baton charge was ordered along with firing of teargas shells to disperse the mob and to bring the situation under control.

Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Sabita Indra Reddy reviewed the situation with top police officials later in the day, and appealed to the people to maintain calm.

A row has been brewing over the Bhagylakshmi Temple abutting Charminar, which symbolizes the historic city. Muslims have opposed attempts to expand the temple on the ground that it was illegal and could mar the beauty of the 400-year-old monument.

The Andhra Pradesh High Court had on November 5 ordered maintainence of status quo as on October 30.

The erection of a canopy over the temple structure, in alleged violation of the high court orders last Sunday, triggered Friday’s violent protests. (ANI)
