Gurgaon, Nov.2 (ANI): External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid on Friday called on different Indian Ocean group nations for regional as global economic growth shifts towards Asia.
He made the appeal during the 12th Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation (IOR-ARC) Council of Ministers meeting attended by dignitaries of 20 nations in Haryana’s Gurgaon city.
Khurshid had earlier in his opening remarks called for exploration of untapped potential of the Indian Ocean region.
Meanwhile, reiterating Khurshid’s call, Secretary General of IOR-ARC Ambassador, K.V Bhagirath highlighted that India had worked closely with its regional partners to strengthen and consolidate the cooperation over shared objectives.
“Not only our countries within the realm seeking membership but nations beyond it too desire partnership. As we grow in numbers let us grasp the positives and simultaneously move forward and expand. In accordance with the charter of the organisations, let our legacy be their protection and development of our inheritance,” said Bhagirath.
Earlier in the day, Khurshid said that IOR-ARC nations had increased cooperation in the field of maritime security and safety, disaster risk reduction, trade and investment facilitation, fisheries management, academic, science and technology, tourism and cultural exchanges after they identified these areas at the meet in Bangalore in May 2012.

It was earlier in 2012, that the first meeting of the Core Group on Cultural Cooperation, the 13thMeeting of the Working Group of Heads of Mission and a meeting to finalize the Draft Constitution of the University Mobility in the Indian Ocean Region were held in South Africa.
The IOR-ARC had introduced several programmes in various spheres and had also launched a professional course for diplomats from IORARC countries.
Other programmes that were launched to strengthen relations among nations were a workshop on coastal zone management, a meeting of Heads of National Archives of our countries.
In order to increase cultural cooperation, International Film Festival of India (IFFI) will be held in Goa, this month. A mobile exhibition of archival documents from IORARC countries had also taken place. (ANI)
