Maradona celebrates 52nd birthday in Kerala

Kannur, Oct 24 (): Soccer champion Diego Maradona, who is in Kerala, did not upset his fans who had crowded in the Municipal Stadium in Kannur on Wednesday just to get a sight of their sports star and the organizers are planning to celebrate Maradona’s 52nd birthday, which falls on October 30, in advance by cutting a 25 kg football shaped cake.

The Argentine soccer champ is the brand ambassador of Bobby Chemmanur International Jewellers and Airlines. He has arrived in Kerala to open a jewellery store in Kannur and to launch the company’s helicopter service.

Earlier, Maradona had arrived in Cochin International Airport amidst tight security. The star took a helicopter to reach Kannur. He landed at the army helipad in Kannur and was quickly moved to the hotel by security staff. The soccer player then visited the municipal stadium in Kannur for his public appearance. The stadium had at least 50,000 fans, which is expected to be double its hosting capacity.

Maradona arrived 12 hours in advance of schedule for the Wednesday’s private occasion. Fearing severe weather in Kerala in the evenings, the organisers requested Maradona to make his visit earlier and he accordingly obliged.

At the hotel on Tuesday, the football legend spent most of the day time trying to overcome his jet lag. But he also took some time to shoot for an ad.

In the evening, Maradona was seen in the balcony of his hotel room and he waved at his fan crowd who had gathered near the hotel to get a glimpse of the superstar – since dawn.

On Wednesday, the football legend held the centre stage of the Municipal stadium, sang, danced and demonstrated many football skills. Amid cheers, I.M.Vijayan, former Indian football captain and Maradona headed a football between them for few minutes.

Maradona’s birthday falls on October 30th, but the organisers said Maradona has given a nod to celebrate his birthday on Wednesday. The birthday cake for the football legend is on the way, five experts are working from Tuesday morning which is in the shape of a football playground with a football placed right in the centre. The cost of the cake is expected to be more than Rs.20,000.
