India invites Bangladesh opposition leader Khaleda Zia to visit Delhi

New Delhi, Oct.24 (ANI): India has invited opposition leader and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia to New Delhi.

The invitation extended to Zia by India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pankaj Saran, is being seen as significant in government circles on both sides, as Bangladesh is to have general elections next year.

Zia is expected to meet President Pranab Mukherjee on October 28. The date for her meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is being finalized. She is also expected to visit Ajmer during her week-long stay.

It is well-known that Zia’s BNP has maintained an anti-India stance since its inception as a political entity, but New Delhi is keen to mend fences with her in the run up to the general elections.

India has managed to add some substance to its relations with Bangladesh during the ruling Awami League’s tenure in office.

It has concluded a land boundary agreement, and knows that improving ties with the BNP will help make this process irreversible. (ANI)
