New Delhi, Sep 25 (): Datawind announced that it had started supplying the low-cost new version Aakash 2 tablet to IIT Bombay and it is under the process of releasing the tablet in October.
Suneet Singh Tuli, CEO of DataWind CEO said that the tablet should be released in a few weeks and he did not know the exact date of the launch. He also revealed that Kapil Sibal, HRD Minister wanted Aakash 2 to be launched on October 5 to mark the first anniversary of Aakash tablet. Tuli said DataWind had started supplying Aakash 2 to IIT Bombay since the last one month and a half.
In a recent event in Hyderabad, Kapil Sibal said that Aakash 2 tablet would be “released soon.” He did not reveal the launch date, but said a dream had germinated about the tablet since the past few years. The minister added that through frugal innovation schemes they could conquer the whole world and that was exactly the Indian government needed to do for India and its development.
Tuli said Datawind has supplied most of its pre-paid bookings, now it has started focussing on the supplies of its non-paid bookings.
Out of the total 55 lakh tablet orders, pre-paid bookings are 4-5 per cent. The pre-paid bookings will be finished in 10 days or a week. Then, the company will focus on the pre-bookings and they are giving them an opportunity to upgrade their orders to the new Android 4 version, Tuli said.
Each day, Datawind is supplying around 1,500-2,000 tablets, which are being assembled in the country and also outside the country, Tuli said.
The main features of Aakash 2 are – it has Android 4.0, 800MHz processor, 7-inch capacitive touchscreen, 256MB RAM, 2GB built-in storage unit, Wi-Fi, GPRS connectivity including voice-calling capability and 3,200 mAh battery that would give upto 3 hours battery life. The tablet has a front-VGA camera and its memory could be expanded by the support of microSD card and miniUSB slot.
