New Delhi, Sep 3 (): A brutal clash broke out between the police and a mob, after a man was hit by a policeman fell down on the ground and unexpectedly died after being run over by another car.
The incident took place when two young men were riding on a motor bike without wearing helmet, on Sunday afternoon. When they were stopped by the police for not wearing helmet, an argument between the cops and the motorcyclist occurred, which made the policeman to hit one of the riders.
As the policeman hit the man with his stick he fell down and was crushed by a passing car. He was at once rushed to Lal Bahadur Shashtri hospital, where he was declared dead. A mob who was watching the ongoing incident became furious and lashed out at the police. The locals in the area also took a march towards the local police post which is in the jurisdiction of New Ashok Nagar police station and had an argument with police.
The mob set fire to a petrol pump and a number of vehicles, at around 8:00 pm on Sunday including a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus. To control the situation police had to fire in the air and had to lathi charge, however they were dispersed after a while.
The police however denied the allegation, by saying the two scooter riders who were under the influence of alcohol tried to escape during a police checking, fell down and was injured. They also said that the man was hospitalized and is under treatment.
The violence triggered due to a rumour and the situation is under control with adequate police protection provided in the locality, said a senior police official. Police have arrested six people in connection with the incident for indulging in pelting stones on the police station.
