Loss to South Africa in second ODI has given England reality check: Cook

London, Aug 29 (ANI): England ODI captain Alastair Cook has said that defeat at the hands of South Africa in the second one-day game has given them a reality check.

England has lost their No.1 status to South Africa for the second time in eight days, this time in the 50-over format on Tuesday night.

The loss, their first in this format for 2012, also brings to an end their 10-match run of victories, one short of equalling the England record.

Cook admitted his players will have to show more character to recover from an 80-run defeat which brought to an end a 10-match winning streak.

It was their first loss in this format of the game since the tour to India last October, a run that lifted them to the top of the ICC rankings, The Telegraph reports.

“It is very strange to talk about the No 1 rankings after every game and I thought it was worked out after each series. It was a surprise we got there and this game shows how much work we have to do,” said Cook.

“We have always said that we are not the finished article. Consistency is something we have talked about. We have had a good run and it is unfortunate it has come to an abrupt end but it is more frustrating when you set high standards and don’t perform to those standards.

“We can stop their momentum. They are playing some good cricket but if you look when we lost the Pakistan Test series [in January] we turned it round in the one-dayers. But we have to do it ourselves and we can’t look anywhere else for excuses. The players have to stand up to be counted if we are going to turn it round.” (ANI)
