Manesar, July 19 (): One person was killed and a total of at least ninety were reportedly injured as labour problem broke out at Maruti Suzuki’s plant on Wednesday in Manesar, 15km from Gurgaon.
Production at the plant was affected after the workers went wild on a rampage and set fire to the company’s office in Manesar, said sources. The trouble started after a suspension of a worker by the management as the worker behaved arrogantly with a senior supervisor at the factory.
According to the workers who went on a rampage, the management staff had passed casteist remarks which forced the worker to hit the supervisor.
The company and the newly formed labour union took a lot of effort to find a solution through dialogue, but were not able to convince the workers leading them to go violent who closed the exit intending not to allow the executives to go out of the premises.
A total of three thousand angry workers assembled together on gate no 2 at the plant and set fire to the office around 6.30pm after the completion of the second shift. Twenty-five fire engines were rushed to the factory from Gurgaon as Manesar has no fire station in its locality, said Gurgaon DCP, Maheshwar Daval.
Even though the fire that was set by the workers was brought under control around 8 pm, smoke were seen all around filling the air even at late midnight and the streets around the company were strewn with remains of glass pieces all around.
Fire engine officials claimed that one burnt body was found but still the body has not yet been identified. The injured were admitted in a number of hospitals including Gurgaon Civil Hospital. The government had taken a serious notice of the issue and warned if anyone indulges in such violence will be severely punished.
The Manesar plant produces Maruti’s key hatchback model, Swift. It was under severe labour dispute in the past leading to repeated protests by workers as well as incurring heavy losses to the company resulting in weak production.
