Twenty seven feared dead in an accident on the Mumbai –Pune Express highway

Mumbai/Pune, May 28 (): Nearly twenty seven people were feared killed and twenty-six others injured when a speedy tempo crashed into a stationary bus that was parked in the corner of the road early on Monday, on the Mumbai –Pune Express highway.

The accident took place in the wee hour around 1.30 am, when a marriage party in two buses was returning home after attending the wedding that was held at Ghatkopar in Mumbai. While the buses were passing through Khalapur highways, the tyre of one of the bus was punctured and was parked on the corner of the road.

As the bus was undergoing repair work, the people inside the first bus had to get down and were sitting by the road between the two buses. Suddenly it met with an accident when a speedy tempo coming from the opposite direction hit the bus that was parked in the back which in return hit the people sitting between the bus killing at least twenty-seven people and injuring twenty-six.

The injured were at once rushed to the MGM hospital at Panvel and Pune’s Sasoon hospital, where three people were declared dead at the time of arrival, police alleged. According to information gathered at least eleven women and four children were among the dead, sources said.

The driver of the tempo who was arrested by the police was taken into custody for charges of negligence and is expected to be produced before the magistrate on Tuesday. The deceased were not able to be easily identified as the impact of the accident was severe.

Some of the injured people were taken to the Pune and Navi Mumbai hospital, police said. The body of the ill-fated bus which was parked in the back side and hit by the tempo was broken into several pieces. An accident case has been filed and investigation will be in progress, said a police official.
