Radha Kumari, veteran actress passes away

Hyderabad, Mar 9 (): Veteran Tollywood actress Radha Kumari passed away on Thursday morning, after suffering a heart stroke at her residence in Mothi Nagar. She breathed her last at the age of 70.

Born in a middle-class family to Ramana Murthy and Surya Prakasamma in Vizianagaram, she married popular stage and film actor and writer, Ravi Kondala Rao. She is survived by son, RV Sashikumar.

Radhakumari, who was fond of acting, started her career as a stage artiste right at the age of 12. She entered the Telugu film industry in 1962 with the film ‘Tene Manasulu’, directed by Adurthi Subba Rao and produced by Sundaram on the banner of Babu Movies. She played the mother of hero Krishna in the movie.

Radha Kumari has acted in over 600 films and was known for her versatile roles. She is known for her humorous portrayals with wonderful timing sense.

Radha Kumari essayed roles of mother or grandmother in most films during a four-decade stint in the film industry during which she established herself as an accomplished character actor.

Radha Kumari was successful in establishing herself as a skilful character actor. The actress is best remembered for her roles in films like ‘Bridavanam’, ‘Okarikiokaru’, ‘Chandamama’, ‘Bhairava Dweepam’ and ‘Oye’, among many others.

With her career spanned several decades, she was seen as the best choice to play good-hearted roles; she had acted with top heroes of two generations. She was a good replacement for the likes of Nirmala in later day films.

Ravi Kondal Rao, Radha Kumari’s husband, was on his way to the US to attend a felicitation function when tragedy struck. He was reportedly on his way back from Dubai upon receiving the news of his wife’s death.

The demise of Radha Kumari has been deeply mourned by several prominent film personalities.
