Home town

[ Poetry serial – Malartamil poems – in the Citizen Column on  Fridays and Mondays]

Home town

Alighting the morning train
Amid the December mist
I walk towards home

In the wayside tree
A boy, collecting
The fallen nuts
For making few rupees
Like I did once
But for few paise

In the afternoon
Nearby a pond
A girl, picking lotus leaves
For selling to flower vendor
Like I did once
To buy story books

Children, with worn out dresses
Are buying cheap candies
In the petty shops
And eating happily
Like I did once

But my street is missing
Stray dogs and Neem trees

I am missing
The poverty at youth
